Overview

Willis Canteen, nestled in the heart of Ultimo, Sydney, offers a genuine taste of Indonesian cuisine that resonates with authenticity and warmth. This modest yet inviting eatery captures the essence of Indonesian home cooking through its thoughtfully prepared menu, featuring beloved traditional dishes such as Gado Gado Lontong, Ketoprak, and Rendang. Each plate tells a story, brought to life by rich, complex sauces—particularly the peanut-based ones—that clearly reflect careful craftsmanship and a deep respect for culinary tradition.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, perfect for those seeking comforting, no-frills meals that evoke the bustling street food culture of Indonesia. Willis Canteen appeals to both Indonesian expats longing for familiar flavors and adventurous local diners eager to explore the depth of Indonesian street food classics. The space, while simple, fosters a cozy, communal dining experience where generous portions invite sharing and slow savoring.

Among the standout dishes, the Gado Gado and Ketoprak shine brightest. Both feature vibrant, fresh vegetables paired with the signature peanut sauce that many customers acclaim as the best they’ve tasted, even comparing it favorably to versions encountered in Indonesia itself. The assortment of street food snacks like Batagor and Siomay also offers a delightful entrée into the rich diversity of Indonesian flavors, while the Nasi Goreng and Sate Ayam with Lontong round out the experience with hearty depth and texture.

Service at Willis Canteen leans towards relaxed, with a pace that reflects the kitchen’s focus on quality over speed. A slight wait during busier times underscores the care invested in each dish rather than any oversight. This approach is appreciated by patrons who value authenticity and home-style preparation over rushed dining.

One minor consideration is the cash-only policy, though the availability of bank transfer at the cashier modernizes this traditional approach. This practical detail does little to detract from the overall experience, which remains rooted firmly in the flavors and aromas that define Indonesian comfort food.

In summary, Willis Canteen offers a richly textured culinary journey through Indonesia’s iconic dishes within a humble Ultimo setting. It’s a destination for diners looking to reconnect with Indonesian culture or anyone seeking soulful, generously portioned meals crafted with care and passion.

This Indonesian restaurant offers a truly authentic dining experience, with a variety of both cold and hot dishes to choose from. You can really taste the effort that goes into each dish—especially the sauces, which are rich, complex, and full of flavor. Service can be a little slow during busy hours, but it's worth the wait. The food feels homemade and thoughtfully prepared, and the portions are generous for the price. A great spot for comforting, no-frills Indonesian food.

Regularly visit this joint, and every time, I always order gado-gado / ketoprak. The portion is very generous for a $20 dish. The peanut sauce is undoubtedly the best so far I've had in Sydney, even better than some I've tried in Indonesia. Next time, I'll try some of their other dishes.

Lovely fresh tastes and welcoming service tucked away in a nice quiet street. Sampled the Gado Gado and the Tahu Goreng and loved every mouthful, even was enough to take some home for an afternoon snack

A friend recommended the Gado Gado here after we had a terrible one at another Indonesian restaurant. It was perfect! Waited for around half an hour, but it was really worth it. The peanut sauce was not the usual store bought one or the gross one made with peanut butter. The portion was very generous. The vegetables were excellent as well and beautifully served in a leaf shaped big bowl. Payment only by bank transfer or cash. The atmosphere and the service were nothing extraordinary.
